From Classroom to Cosmos: Gosling Does it Again with Project Hail Mary

There’s something deeply compelling about a story that strands a single human being in the vast, silent unknown of space - and then asks: Who are you when no one is watching?

And, how can I keep my hair looking this amazing in space?

That’s exactly what Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, delivers -and why it stayed with me long after I left the theater.

If you loved The Martian (and I really did - one of my all-time favorites), you’ll feel a familiar pulse here. Both stories come from the mind of Andy Weir, whose ability to blend science, survival, and humor into something intensely human is really special.

What struck me most about this film wasn’t just the science or the scale. It was the character of Grace.

Gosling’s Grace is not your typical heroic genius. He’s brilliant, yes - but he doesn’t quite believe in himself. Even as others clearly see his potential, he underestimates his own value at nearly every turn. That contradiction makes him feel vulnerable, human, and - at times - unexpectedly funny.

And here’s what I loved most: Grace is a teacher.

I teach digital video, so I fully appreciate Gosling reminding us that teaching is cool - just saying.

No matter how far the mission escalates, no matter how high the stakes climb, he never stops being that guy... His instinct is to explain, to connect, to guide - to admit he doesn’t have all the answers, and to keep learning. And in doing so, he grows into the very person he never thought he could be.

That idea hit me hard.

Because it’s not just a space movie. It’s a story about identity, purpose and connection. About how the thing you are at your core doesn’t need to change when your circumstances do - it might be the thing that saves you.

Also worth noting: Gosling character's name is Grace. I personally find naming characters very difficult. As I want the name to be authentic and meaningful. The writer, he could have easily called the character by his first name, Ryland, throughout the film, but the intention was to give the character the Grace to evolve, or the Grace of imperfection, perhaps? I didn't ask him yet, but I think it's pretty smart.

Project Hail Mary isn’t just about survival in space.

It’s about self-worth.

It’s about purpose.

How you see yourself.

And it’s about the quiet power of someone who doesn’t see themselves as the hero - until they have no choice but to become one.

And maybe that’s why it works so well.
