My 30 Day Weight Watchers Challenge - Lose Weight GF

This is my experience and should not be used in place of your doctor's advice.

Weight Watcher, Weight Loss, Michele Gerber, I am a writer, producer, content creator, professor, adventure seeker. and sadly, I've had to be gluten-free for over 15 years. So, I am kind of an expert. I am passionate about, or maybe obsessed with, entertainment and my latest binges, my favorite gluten-free foods, projects and design, and adventure. And, I'll sprinkle in social commentary. Because somethings need to be said Out Loud.

Recently, a friend received a poor health diagnosis and her doctor recommended she begin using #WeightWatchers to lose weight to regain her health.

I'm fast approaching 50 and I'd like to accomplish my health and fitness goals for myself. While I am not struggling with any health issues, other than Celiac Disease, since the "Pandemic 15" I am not where I'd like to be weight wise. Years ago I was very fit and I'd like to get back there.

The Weight Watchers experiment. Let's GO!

Day 1 - Monday

I signed up for Weight Watchers via the app. It cost me about about $30 for the month. After a short survey I was allotted 23 points per day to get me to my goal of dropping 20 pounds. The app also gave me a few extra bonus points for the week.

Once I found out about the 0 point foods I got really excited, and made a trip to the grocery store. I stocked up on chicken, fruits, veggies, and eggs. Then, I did something I hate, I meal prepped! Which is probably going to be the secret to success for this project.

I have not changed my fitness routine. I still put on my sneakers and head out for my workout. Typically, I do about an hour walk / run a day.

Day 2 - Tuesday

I love the 0 point foods. I feel like I can find something to eat within that list all the time. Although, I am starting to discover the places I have been going wrong. It is my treats! Every evening I have been eating a low calorie soy ice cream bar that us SO delicious! Ummmm, it is 11 points by itself. Such a sad moment.

And, I'll sprinkle in social commentary. Because somethings need to be said Out Loud.

My substitute was a plate of strawberries with a couple of tablespoons of Cool Whip. It was 4 points and still really good.

Day 3 - Wednesday

Making sure I have strawberries and bananas in the house for those sweet treat moments. I also had to run out and get sugar free chocolate pudding, specifically "Cook and Serve". When I was growing up my aunts would always eat this as a treat when dieting. Eating that warm chocolate with a spoonful of Cool Whip is so good! And, only a few points.

I found another wrong turn...It is my sauces. I did not realized my favorite "Ken's Honey Mustard Dressing/Dipping Sauce is 6 points all by itself. OMG!

Kens Dressing, Weight Watcher, Weight Loss, Michele Gerber, I am a writer, producer, content creator, professor, adventure seeker. and sadly, I've had to be gluten-free for over 15 years. I had to make a fat free greek yogurt mixed with hot sauce sauce. Not bad and Zero Points!

Day 4 - Thursday

Did you know that sugar free stuff like the pudding and Coke Zero, while fine on the diet, can give you A LOT of GAS? That was a big surprise! Apparently, it is the artificial sweetener. I had no idea, but sometimes you need a little something. Also, at least for me, I've noticed feeling achy in my joints after drinking Coke Zero. I don't have any issues with regular Coke which would be SUPER high is sugar and calories on the diet. Damn! I'll have to move back to water.

Day 5 - Friday

So, it is Cinco De Mayo and it is Friday.

Can Weight Watchers and I handle a holiday?

I have been doing really well at watching what I'm eating. Today I am loosening the restrictions. Weight Watchers has these "Weeklys". I have not used any of them yet. Let's see if they can hold up to fresh strawberry margaritas, guacamole and tortilla Chips. I did order a really healthy entry, shrimp fajitas. I never get the tortilla shells because of my gluten issue anyway.

A great time was had by all. I am nervous to see the scale tomorrow through.

Day 6 - Saturday

My aunt brought over Zero Point Vegetable Soup. Really good! I had that and a Cloud Bread Grilled Cheese Sandwich. For my sweet treat I made the Strawberry "Nice" Cream WW promotes on the App. It was actually surprising good, not like the banana pancake fiasco!

Earlier in the day I made the Zero Banana Pancakes and had to throw the whole thing in the garbage! Disgusting! My son said so too! Sad moment.

Day 7 - Sunday

Grocery shopping with the idea that I need to stock up on ZERO meats, fruits and veggies for the week.

Chicken breast, shrimp, eggs, cucumbers, strawberries, watermelon, bananas, corn, fat free greek yogurt, chickpeas, broccoli, asparagus, and riced cauliflower were on my list.

I used to HATE riced cauliflower until we changed the game.

Best Riced Cauliflower:

1. In a frying pan add low sodium chicken broth, garlic, and a Sazon Seasoning.Packet.

2. Stir until fully blended.

3. Add frozen riced cauliflower.

4. Mix, defrost, and let it cook all the way through letting the moisture cook off.

Day 8 - Monday

I am not sure if this is actually good for you or but it sure tasted great!

I made air popped popcorn and topped it with I Can't Believe it is Not Butter. For the last 15 years I have primarily eaten healthy/organic foods. I'm not exactly sure where this "fake butter" falls, but Zero Calorie Butter and Zero Calorie Popcorn is a great snack!

Day 9 - Tuesday

There is a restaurant section on the WW app and Chipotle is my daughter's favorite place to eat. I was actually able to get a 8 point meal there. I ordered a bowl with grilled chicken, ALL the veggies, a small scoop of brown rice and I always get guac! No dairy. It was very good and very filling.

Day 9 - Tuesday

Today was a busy family and kids sports kind of night ending with a trip to Outback. I was starving. I am trying to be extra careful because the Chipotle bowl made the scale go in the wrong direction BUT I am not considering it a fail. I am considering it information I can use to improve.

So, when I went to Outback tonight I researched the restaurant section closely and ordered: shrimp 4pts, asparagus 0pts, and grilled onions 1pts. It was all very good and I am hoping the scale moves again.

I am starting to get a little frustrated as I thought I would be further along especially with all of the modifications I have been making.

Saturday - we went to the movies and I made my own GF Zero Popcorn snack. It was a good alternative. Also, I picked up a great grilled chicken breast salad. I got in a lot of family time and some relaxing.

Sunday - Prime rib, crab legs, corn on the cob, and potatoes. One great meal with normal portions. Delicious.

I was surprised that I did not gain any weight during this time. I guess because I haven't been using the extra weeklies it all worked out.

Weight: 151

Points: No Idea, but I tried to be reasonable while enjoying my time with family and students.

I made my aunt's fantastic baked chicken thighs. It was not Zero points but since I had a lower point lunch of chickpeas, hard boiled eggs and cucumbers I figured I would splurge a bit.

You coat the chicken breasts with a little olive oil, salt, pepper and McCormick Chicken Seasoning. Cover with aluminum foil in baking dish for 1 hour at 300, then take the cover off and bake for another hour. OMG. The chicken in Crispy outside and juicy inside. So good!

I went biking and got about 15 miles in and met friends out at a great burger restaurant. Of course being GF I ordered it on a lettuce wrap and ordered a baked potato instead for fries because of the gluten cross-contamination. The burger was beautiful, huge and delicious. I cut it in half.

We had an end of the year potluck baquet. I brought my own food. Then there was a family gathering with some food. I eat modistly at both. Hard to track food in these situations. Although, I did have rice and that is a killer for me.

Conclusion:

6 pounds in 30 days.

Apparently, if you do not have much weight to lose it is more challenging to make progress.

I averaged 1-ish pounds a week and have been told this is exactly where you want to be on WW. Slow and steady without deprivation. Although, I will say there were definitely times I felt like I needed to get some more food and I did not want to eat chicken, eggs or veggies.

The app is great but if you start eating the same foods on rotation, you may find yourself getting a bit lazy about entering the repeats.

My pal lost the same about of weight in the same amount of time.

I did discover that A LOT of my calories were coming from sauces. The sauces I love. I found alternatives but they really do taste like alternatives.

Being gluten-free actually helped me, as I have to limit my bread/processed carbs already.

Do your best to drink water and stay hydrated.

I eat every little beef in my 30 days. On the 31st day I have a great cheeseburger!

I think I will continue a WW strategy. Basically, eating good healthy foods, just less of them, and focus on the zero foods. Also, I am going to begin more weight bearing exercises. Started a 100 squats routine and I am already sore.

More to come...
